India is a big country with varied states. People following different religions and speaking different languages stay together like citizens of one country. The democratic right given by the constitution of the country is equal for one and all. In fact the country follows all of it right from the grass root level. Though problems exist in each level of execution, yet things get sorted.

Road safety rules and regulations are designed for the entire country in a manner in which it can be for the best interest of the citizens. Certain responsibilities lie with the citizens too. They have to follow the rules to make the execution of the same a success. Road safety rules in India is also designed as per the interest of the citizens.

India being a big country faces the problem of proper execution of rules in the entire country. The country has 28 states which have its own governing body and then the states have villages which again have their panchayats; hence the challenge of bringing everything under one roof is quite a task. But the constitution defines everything beautifully and has room and scope for amendments whenever required.

Following are some of the road safety rules in India for driving:

  • The no. 1 point is that the person should be a citizen of India.
  • First and the foremost rule of driving is the age. Any person who is 18 years and above is eligible for driving. The driving license should bear the age of the person.
  • Another point which has attained importance in the recent years is the prohibition of using the mobile phone while driving. This can cause serious road accidents which have proved to be fatal in many circumstances.
  • We often come across hoardings on the road which says don’t drink and drive. Often when we get up in the morning, the newspapers feature accidents caused due to drunken driving in the wee hours of the morning. Driving and drinking just do not gel at all and is a deadly combination.
  • Wearing a seat belt while driving is a must. Both the front seat people that are the driver and the person sitting next to the driver have to wear a seat belt.
  • Do not honk unnecessarily. Special mention in this regard is places near the hospital or school.
  • The speed limit has been set for the vehicles for e.g. In some areas the normal speed for cars is 60 km and for heavy vehicles like trucks or buses is 40 km. this has to be followed failing which a penalty has to be paid.
  • Red light jumping is an offence. The person who does this has to report in the court at a later date as the summons reaches the place of stay of the person. Sometimes, the person is caught that very moment and the license is taken by the traffic policeman. Another punishment is the payment of fine as penalty for red light jumping.
  • Be extra cautious while driving near a school as small kids are often found crossing the road on foot or walking in the pedestrians.
  • Wait at the zebra crossing when people are crossing the road.
  • Two wheelers should wear helmets while driving. This is for their own benefit. Even women drivers should wear the helmet while driving a two wheeler. It is an offence in many states failing which the person has to surrender the license or pay a fine.
  • As far as the cyclists are concerned, they should keep left on the road while riding their cycles because fast moving vehicles drive on the right side of the road as per traffic rules.
  • Sign boards are planted on the roads to give an idea about the nature of the road like
  1. Sharp curve ahead
  2. Keep left
  3. Keep right
  4. Men at work
  5. School ahead
  6. No parking
  7. No stopping
  8. No U turn
  9. Traffic light ahead

These are to mention a few. These road signs are meant to warn the drivers so that they can slow their speed and be cautious while driving.

Few rules for pedestrians are mentioned below:

  • Pedestrians should walk on the footpath. They should not walk in the middle of the road.
  • Look right, then left and then again right. Cross the road if it is clear.
  • Walk on the left side of the road.
  • Cross the road at the zebra crossing.

Rules for bus commuters:

  • Bus commuter should board the bus at the bus stop
  • Bus driver also should not stop for the passenger in the middle of the road.
  • If the bus is full with passengers, do not hang outside the bus as it can be very dangerous. Wait or the other bus.

After all the road safety rules have been made for the people of India for their own safety. A little bit of impatience can lead to disastrous results and hence it is advisable to stick to the rules. We often also read on the roads that better late than never. This clearly indicates towards the fact that over speeding can be very dangerous and lead to uncalled for situations.

People in India need to be more sensitive towards each other and therefore this will help in developing road and civic sense with more force. Certain times the rules require force to be followed. This should not be the case and it should come from within to help each other and be sensitive towards the fellow citizens.

Be proud to be an Indian and respect each and every rule set by the government because it has been created for the best interest of the people residing in the country. Follow the rules on the road for your own safety. This will enhance the experience of using the road is it for waling or driving.

In examination of the apprehension expressed by Mother NGOs of Individual States in India, on the epidemic of Road Crashes in the Country resulting in loss of life, serious injuries and loss of material goods,IFROS undertook the task of preparing an advanced initiative to set in motion a series of measures by various stake holding State and Central Government Agencies to improve Road Safety. The emphasis of the initiative is on instantaneous mandatory measures, which are preventive in nature and do not cost much to the exchequer. It is proposed to prepare a comprehensive policy delineating the medium and long term measures and the financial support that is required to improve Road Safety with the following goals. To bring down the increasing number of Road Crashes.To earmark separate funds for Road Safety programmes. To draw up specific programmes to improve major roads for safe travel, to protect vulnerable road users and to improve driver training, licensing and monitoring procedures. To obtain better co-ordination between various government departments and NGOs. To create information system on Road Crashes and to suggest post-accident relief and other remedial measures. As an immediate measure, it is also proposed to run an awareness campaign which not only involves the education and sensitization of the stakeholders like students, drivers, vehicle owners and the pedestrians but also involving the government departments and public representatives to undertake immediate ameliorative steps.

    I observed an error in the pedestrian safety rules content of you website.
    As a rule pedestrian should walk on footpaths to walk.
    If footpath not available for that road, we must “Walk to Right side margin of the road facing the on coming traffic”.

    In heading “Few rules for pedestrians” you mentioned “Walk on the left side of the road” this information is wrong. always walk on the right side of the road so you can see the coming traffic. In India we drive on the left side so for the safety of pedestrians always walk (walk not drive,drive is on left side) always walk on the right side of the road. thank you
